About the
ChillEx Study

Could a probiotic have an effect on student’s stress and/or anxiety levels as they prepare for exams?

In this study, researchers will be investigating the effect of a probiotic on anxiety in medical, dental and health science students preparing for semester exams.

The study period will be over 14-weeks during the build up to your semester exams.

You will be required to take the probiotic for a period of 10 weeks, 8 weeks before your exam and 2 weeks after your first exam.

We will also be assessing how the probiotic affects calmness, alertness and sleep.

About the Probiotic

The probiotic in the ChillEx Study is Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37. This probiotic is considered suitable and safe for human consumption by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

Previous research studies have shown that Lactobacillus has improved mood and brain power.1-5

Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.6

About Clinical Research Studies

What is a clinical research study?

A clinical research study (also called a research study) is a medical study that helps to answer important questions about an investigational product – these may include how well an investigational product works in treating a certain condition.

If you join the ChillEx Study, you will take the study capsules by mouth, once a day for 10 weeks – that’s 8 weeks before your first exam and for 2 weeks after your first exam.

During the study, you can expect to visit the clinic 6 times. At these visits you will undergo health assessments, such as medical questionnaires, a brief physical examination, blood and possibly urine samples.

At home, you will need to collect saliva samples. 50% of participants in the study will be randomly required to donate stool samples to look at the gut microbiome. You will also be asked to complete a short daily diary.

We will contact you to explain more about the study before you make your decision about participating. You will attend an in-person screening visit where a research doctor will help determine if you qualify and if the study is right for you.

There is no cost to participate in the ChillEx Study. The probiotic being tested in the study and study-related assessments will be provided free of charge. You will be compensated up to €650 for your travel and time in the study
